Do you agree with my analysis or disagree? let me know...
MTV’s hit reality series, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County is about teenagers who live in the real OC of California, Laguna Beach, who leads extraordinary and very dramatic life. In the episode #212, all of the Laguna Beach crew are anticipating for their last high school prom. The conflict begins when Jason, Laguna’s own bad-boy and his best friend, Talan talks about who they are planning to take to prom. Talan previously has had a romantic relationship with Kristen, who he is unsure of asking because she is known as the “player”. Although he has some doubtful, he ends up asking Kristen to prom by surprising her by decorating her garage with dozens of roses and balloons. Kristen, still dateless for prom, throws a warm hug, giving Talan a sense of feeling that it was going to be a superb prom. This complication leads to a crisis, when both of them go to a pre-prom party at their friend’s house, and Talan catches Kristen flirting with every guy but him. When Talan finally finds Kristen, her words to him were, “don’t count on me holding on to you,” and leaves him again. The story reaches climax when Kristen ditches Talan for good at the dance (actual prom). Humiliated and angered, Talan later reflects back on prom and tells his friends that he is completely over Kristen, ending that episode. This episode takes place in Laguna Beach, California, and it is told in the present time. Although the episode was shot couple of months before it actually aired on TV, the only flashbacks are in the beginning when Kristen tells the summary of what happened in the previous episode. Point of view is objective/dramatic, because the camera follows each character around and does not have a narrator or a specific person who can tell what the other characters are doing/feeling. The overall season’s main character/protagonist is Kristen, but in this episode, the story seemed to revolve more on Talan’s conflict and his point of view. Talan, being the protagonist, is also a dynamic character, because he undergoes a change in his feelings about Kristen. On the other hand, Kristen, in this episode, is an antagonist and is a static character. Her feeling for Talan does not change from the beginning to end, even if she did agree to go to prom with him. Creators of Laguna Beach use indirect presentations, leaving clues and hints by character’s acts and what they say, which most of the times, the implications are clearly obvious. Theme of this episode is “One might like a person until you see the ugly side of them.” Talan fell in love with Kristen because of her playful, sweet, sexy vibe she was sending him earlier on in the season, but he realized that this was one of Kristen’s mischievous tricks to get boys to fall in love with her. Kristen really shows how insensitive and selfish she can be by ditching Talan, and his being a smart guy finally comes to a conclusion that she is not worth it. Laguna Beach fans could really see this trend in plot structure, where Kristen messes multiple boys’ minds and tricking them into believing that she likes them, but in fact, having no interest in them whatsoever. Although Kristen is a static character in this episode, she is a round character if looked at the whole season, being very intricate and complex with her feelings and emotions.
